How this country's factor is derived

Poland's 2023 electricity factor of 0.657 kg CO₂e/kWh is published by KOBiZE and reflects a grid still dominated by hard coal and lignite (together ~60% of generation). It is now the highest factor in the EU — Poland's transition is legally committed but slower than in western Europe.

2023 electricity emission factor
0.657 kg CO₂e / kWh · EEA / KOBiZE 2024 (2023).
Grid mix drivers
Hard coal + lignite still supply ~60% of Polish electricity. · First nuclear plant scheduled to come online around 2033 — will materially lower the factor. · Renewables (mainly wind onshore + rooftop solar) are the fastest-growing segment but from a low base.
Scope 1 · Natural gas
0.184 kg CO₂e / kWh · DEFRA 2024.
Scope 1 · Diesel & petrol
2.51 kg / L diesel, 2.31 kg / L petrol · DEFRA 2024.
Scope 3 · Purchased goods (spend-based)
0.35 kg CO₂e / EUR · EEIO screening factor. Replace with supplier-specific before disclosure.

Worked example

A Warsaw-based e-commerce SME with 25 people, 55,000 kWh of grid electricity, minimal on-site fuel, 12,000 km of delivery driving and €320k of purchased services generates 36 tCO₂e Scope 2 (heavy for a services business — that's the coal grid), 2 tCO₂e Scope 1, and 116 tCO₂e Scope 3. Total: ~154 tCO₂e / year. In Poland, Scope 2 disproportionately shapes any office-based footprint — a green tariff via Guarantees of Origin (świadectwo pochodzenia) is the fastest reduction lever.

Frequently asked questions

  • Why does a small Polish office produce more Scope 2 than a Cypriot one for the same kWh?
Because 0.657 (PL) is higher than 0.622 (CY). Poland is the single highest-carbon grid in the EU today. For the same 100,000 kWh of consumption, a Polish office emits 65.7 tCO₂e vs 62.2 tCO₂e in Cyprus, ~35 in the Netherlands, ~17 in Spain and ~5.6 in France.
  • How do świadectwa pochodzenia fit into market-based Scope 2?
Polish Guarantees of Origin (świadectwa pochodzenia z OZE) are the equivalent of EU-wide GOs. If you retire them, you can claim the associated electricity as zero-emission for market-based Scope 2 — but you must disclose both location-based (0.657) and market-based figures under the GHG Protocol Scope 2 Guidance.
  • Are the calculations audit-grade?
No. The tool is an indicative screening estimate using published 2024 factors. For CSRD, VSME or SBTi disclosure you still need metered activity data, a defined organisational boundary and - for Scope 2 - dual location-based and market-based reporting.
  • Is my data saved anywhere?
No. Every value stays in your browser's local storage. Nothing is uploaded, shared or read by us.
  • Can I export the report for my auditor?
Yes. "Save as PDF" produces a print-formatted report. "Download CSV" gives you the raw data for Excel or a reporting platform.
